Home Care for Armed Forces Veterans

Veterans of the UK armed forces have unique health and care needs — including physical injuries, PTSD, hearing and visual impairments, and the legacy of service. A range of specialist services and benefits exist specifically for veterans, many of which are underused.

Veterans' Specific Care Needs

Military service leaves a lasting mark on health. Veterans are statistically at higher risk of:

  • PTSD and mental health conditions — post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and substance misuse are more prevalent among veterans than the general population
  • Physical injuries — amputation, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and musculoskeletal injuries from service
  • Hearing loss — noise-induced hearing impairment is very common in veterans
  • Respiratory conditions — from service environments
  • Older veterans' health — WWII and National Service-era veterans are now very elderly with complex age-related conditions alongside service-related health issues

Understanding PTSD in a Home Care Context

Post-traumatic stress disorder can significantly affect day-to-day life and how someone interacts with carers. Key things for carers to understand about veterans with PTSD:

  • Sudden movements, unexpected noise or touch can trigger intense anxiety responses or flashbacks
  • Trust may take time to build — be patient and consistent
  • Sleep problems and nightmares are common — care schedules need to be flexible and morning visits timed sensitively
  • Anniversaries, news events or specific sounds/smells can trigger difficult reactions
  • The person may prefer not to discuss their service — this should always be respected
  • Physical and emotional control is important to many veterans — always seek permission before touching and explain what you're doing

Veterans' Benefits and Funding

In addition to standard UK disability benefits, veterans may be entitled to specific additional support:

War Pension

Veterans who were injured or became ill because of their service before 6 April 2005 may be entitled to a War Pension, paid by Veterans UK (part of the Ministry of Defence). The pension compensates for disablement caused by service.

Veterans UK: 0808 191 4218

Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS)

For injuries or illnesses caused by service after 6 April 2005. Provides lump sum and, for the most seriously injured, a Guaranteed Income Payment (GIP) — a monthly income for life.

Veterans Mobility Fund

For veterans who need specialist mobility equipment not available through standard NHS routes.

Standard Benefits

Veterans with disabilities also qualify for standard UK disability benefits:

Key Veterans' Organisations

  • SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) — welfare support: 0800 138 9990

Finding Suitable Home Care

When arranging home care for a veteran, look for providers who:

  • Understand the Armed Forces Covenant — a public commitment by businesses to treat veterans fairly
  • Have experience with PTSD and trauma-informed care
  • Are willing to invest time in building trust before beginning care
  • Can work flexibly around the veteran's routine and preferences
  • Communicate clearly and calmly, particularly during personal care tasks

Ekvarta is a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant. We take the time to understand each veteran's service background and specific needs before care begins.
