Attendance Allowance is one of the most underclaimed benefits in the UK. Hundreds of thousands of people who are entitled to it never apply — sometimes because they don't know it exists, sometimes because they assume their savings or income will disqualify them (they won't — it's not means-tested), and sometimes because they feel they 'don't need it badly enough'.
2026 Rates
From April 2026, Attendance Allowance rates are:
Lower rate: £72.65 per week — for people who need help with personal care during the day or supervision at night.
Higher rate: £108.55 per week — for people who need help or supervision both day and night.
This is tax-free and paid on top of any other income or pension. Even if you only qualify for the lower rate, claiming can also trigger additional amounts in Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.
Who Qualifies
You qualify if you are aged 65 or over and have needed help with personal care or supervision for at least 6 months due to a physical or mental condition. 'Help with personal care' includes washing, dressing, eating, getting to the toilet, and moving around safely. 'Supervision' includes needing someone nearby in case something goes wrong — such as a fall, a seizure or a sudden episode of confusion.
You do not need to have someone actually providing the help currently. The question is whether you need it, not whether you are receiving it.
Common Reasons Claims Are Rejected
The three most common reasons Attendance Allowance claims are rejected or under-awarded are:
1. The claimant describes their best days rather than their worst. The form asks how you manage on a typical day — but many people naturally minimise their difficulties. Be honest about your worst days.
2. The form doesn't give enough detail. 'I struggle with washing' is not enough. 'I cannot safely get into the bath without someone present due to balance problems, and need help soaping and drying my back' is much stronger.
3. No supporting evidence is provided. A letter from your GP or specialist confirming your conditions and limitations is very helpful. Not essential — but it strengthens a borderline claim.
How to Apply
Call 0800 731 0122 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm) and ask for a form. Or download it from GOV.UK. Age UK (0800 678 1602) offers free help with completing the form — this is highly recommended if you are not confident.
If your claim is refused or lower-rated than you expected, always challenge it. Ask for a mandatory reconsideration (within one month) and then appeal to an independent tribunal if needed. The majority of appealed decisions are changed.
