The Difference Between Respite Care and Regular Home Care

Many families don't realise respite care is a distinct service. Here's what it means, who it's for and how to access it.

The word 'respite' comes from the Latin for 'looking back' — a pause, a breathing space. In care, it means giving family carers a break from their caring responsibilities. It is a distinct type of support from regular home care, though the practical delivery can look similar.

What Is Respite Care?

Respite care is temporary care provided to give the usual carer — typically a family member — a break. It can be:

Home-based respite: a paid carer visits the home so the family carer can go out, rest, or sleep.

Day centre attendance: the person being cared for attends a day centre for several hours, giving the home carer free time.

Short-term residential respite: the person stays in a care home or respite facility for a period — a week, a fortnight — while the family carer takes a proper break or holiday.

Overnight sitting: a carer stays overnight so the family carer can sleep without interruption.

Who Is It For?

Respite care is for two groups simultaneously: the person receiving care (who may benefit from fresh company and stimulation) and the family carer (who needs and deserves rest). Good respite is not just 'cover' — it is support that benefits both parties.

Family carers often feel guilty about needing a break. They shouldn't. Caring is exhausting, and a carer who is burnt out cannot provide good care. Respite is not abandonment — it is sustainability.

How to Access Respite Care

Contact your local council's adult social care team and request a Carer's Assessment. This is a free assessment of your own needs as a carer, and it can unlock funding for respite. The council may fund a set number of respite hours or days per year.

Private respite care can also be arranged directly with home care agencies. Ekvarta offers flexible respite support — planned or at short notice — for family carers who need a break.
