Safeguarding Emergency

Who to call if a vulnerable adult is in immediate danger of abuse or neglect.

Key Facts

  • Always call 999 if there is immediate risk to life
  • For non-emergency safeguarding concerns, call the council's adult safeguarding team
  • You can report anonymously
  • The council must acknowledge a referral within 24 hours

Immediate Danger

If someone is in immediate danger — being physically harmed, locked in, or in a life-threatening situation — call 999. Do not wait.

Non-Immediate Concern

If you are concerned about abuse or neglect that is not immediately life-threatening, call the local council's adult safeguarding team. Most councils have a 24/7 line. You can report even if you are not certain — the council will investigate and determine next steps. Your report can be anonymous.
