Key Facts
- Walking aids (sticks, frames) are available on NHS prescription via GP or physiotherapist
- NHS wheelchair services provide manual and powered wheelchairs for those with a permanent need
- The wheelchair voucher scheme allows you to choose a more expensive model and top up
- Rollators and other equipment can be purchased from mobility shops if not available on NHS
- Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available via Motability Scheme
NHS Walking Aids
Your GP or physiotherapist can prescribe basic walking aids — walking sticks, elbow crutches, zimmer frames and rollators. These are loaned by the NHS and should be returned when no longer needed. For more complex needs, a referral to a physiotherapist or occupational therapist is needed.
NHS Wheelchair Services
If you have a permanent condition that affects your mobility, you can be referred to the NHS Wheelchair Service (usually via your GP or hospital consultant). They will assess your needs and provide a wheelchair on long-term loan. You may be offered a choice through the wheelchair voucher scheme — if you choose a more expensive model, you top up the difference.
