Home Adaptations
Practical changes to your home that make it safer and more accessible — from grab rails to through-floor lifts.
Key Facts
- Small adaptations (grab rails, handrails) are often provided free by councils
- Larger adaptations can be funded via the Disabled Facilities Grant
- Landlords cannot refuse reasonable adaptations for disabled tenants
- Home improvement agencies can help manage adaptation work
- Planning permission is rarely needed for internal adaptations
Small Adaptations
Many councils provide simple adaptations free of charge or at low cost — grab rails by the toilet and bath, handrails on steps, lever taps, raised toilet seats and bath boards. Contact your local council's occupational therapy or adult social care team to request a visit.
Major Adaptations
Larger projects — wet rooms, stairlifts, ramps, widened doorways, through-floor lifts — typically require funding via the Disabled Facilities Grant. An occupational therapist assessment is usually required first to confirm the adaptations are necessary and appropriate.
