- Some councils provide telecare equipment free or subsidised — ask your social worker
- Telecare does not replace human care but provides additional safety
Pendant Alarms
A pendant alarm (worn around the neck or wrist) allows someone to press a button and be connected to a 24/7 response centre. The centre will speak to them, call a nominated contact, or summon emergency services as needed. This is often the first piece of equipment recommended for someone living alone.
Providers include Careline, Tunstall, and many local councils provide their own service. Costs typically range from £15–£40/month.
Fall Detectors and Sensors
Fall detectors are worn like a pendant but automatically trigger an alert if they detect a fall — no button pressing needed. Door sensors and bed sensors can alert carers or family members if someone gets up at night or leaves the house. Stove cut-offs automatically turn off the cooker if it is left on. These are particularly useful for people with dementia.
